Today in class we shared the liturgy of the word for the 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the first reading, Isaiah 49:14-15, God reassures His people that even if a mother could forget her own child, He will never forget us. Truly, it is impossible that a mother forgets her child...and that's the point! More so God will NEVER forget us! We all know what it feels like to be forgotten so our challenge is to consider the forgotten and the marginalized and let then know they're not forgotten. Visit the nursing home, speak to the homeless. You can make a difference, you are the face of Jesus here on Earth!
In the second reading Paul, in 1Corinthians 4:1-5, writes to the Corinthians about being stewards. All o of us are challenged to reclaim the idea of stewardship. We must consider ways we use our time, talents and treasures to further the mission of Jesus and spreading His Good News. Paul also reminds us that we are also "stewards of the mysteries of God." Our Catholic faith, all that God has revealed and all the Church has taught is in our hands. It is our responsibility to care for those mysteries, to share them and hand them on intact. When we are good stewards of the mysteries through evangelization we are also servants of Christ!
Finally, in the Matthew's Gospel (Matthew 6:24-34) Jesus tells his disciples, essentially, don't worry, be happy! He asks them, what have you gained from worrying? He reminds them that if God provides for the birds in the air, if he "clothes" the fields in colorful splendor, why would He forget about us? We are made in His likeness, we are children...like a mother loves a child and never forgets (remember Isaiah's message) then why would he forget us?
"Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself." - Jesus of Nazareth
